    Fuji Introduces Velvia 50 (again)

    By admin | March 12, 2007

I’m not sure what this will mean for most photographers as digital is taking over the landscape of photography, but part of me is very happy that Fujifilm has announced that they are going to start manufacturing Velvia 50 slide film again and it will be available in late spring, 2007 according to their press release.

Pear Blossoms - Macro PhotographyThey originally announced that they reason that Velvia 50 was being discontinued last year was because they could no longer obtain the raw materials needed to make Velvia 50. Now it seems Fujifilm has found a way; from their press release, “As a result, Fujifilm research and development teams have developed substitute raw materials and new manufacturing technologies that enable the company to restart production.” Part of me thinks they never did run out of raw materials and that all of this was simply a test (or bad marketing decision) to see what the demand of Velvia 50 really was. The answer is apparently that people liked Velvia 50 and that most people did not buy into the new Velvia 100 (myself included).

New Fuji Velvia 50I still am shooting slide film and love Velvia 50, so it seems that this would be good news; however, I had been banking on the lack of supply for my beloved slide film to be a great excuse to get that Canon 30D (or 40D if I wait long enough).

    I’m looking for a new excuse . . .
